Built to Die: The Tech Industry's Dirty Little Secret Is Killing the Planet One Upgrade at a Time
There's a moment most of us know intimately. Your phone starts lagging after a software update. Your laptop battery won't hold a charge past two hours. Your wireless earbuds — the ones that cost $250 — start cutting out, and you discover the battery is glued inside a sealed case with no way to replace it. You shrug, curse a little, and start browsing for a replacement.
That moment? It was engineered.
Planned obsolescence — the deliberate design of products to fail, degrade, or become incompatible within a predictable window — isn't a conspiracy theory. It's a business model. And for the biggest names in consumer tech, it is one of the most lucrative strategies on the books. It's also one of the most catastrophic for the planet, and almost nobody in Washington is doing a damn thing about it.
The Numbers Behind the Wreckage
The world generated a record 62 million metric tons of electronic waste in 2022, according to the UN's Global E-waste Monitor. That's roughly equivalent to the weight of 107,000 Boeing 747s, piled up in a single year. The United States is the second-largest contributor globally, generating about 7.7 million metric tons annually — and less than 25% of it is formally recycled.
The rest? It gets dumped in landfills, shipped to processing sites in West Africa and Southeast Asia where workers — often children — burn and acid-wash circuit boards to extract trace metals, or it simply sits in a drawer until someone throws it away. Every discarded device carries with it a carbon debt: the energy burned to mine lithium, cobalt, and rare earth minerals; the manufacturing emissions from factories in China and Malaysia; the shipping miles logged across oceans. When a device dies after three years instead of ten, that entire carbon investment gets written off — and the cycle starts again.
Apple, Samsung, Google, and Microsoft collectively sell hundreds of millions of devices every year. Their growth models depend on replacement cycles. Slow those cycles down, and the quarterly earnings calls get uncomfortable.
How They Do It — And How They Hide It
The tactics are sophisticated enough to look like progress.
Software updates are the cleanest weapon. In 2017, Apple was caught throttling the performance of older iPhones through iOS updates — ostensibly to protect aging batteries, but the effect was predictable: users experienced sluggish phones and rushed to upgrade. Apple eventually paid $500 million in a class-action settlement but admitted no wrongdoing. The practice, dressed up in the language of "user experience," continues in subtler forms across the industry.
Then there's the hardware trap. Modern smartphones are engineered with batteries soldered or glued into place, making self-repair functionally impossible for the average consumer. Laptops ship with RAM soldered directly to the motherboard — a change that offers marginal performance gains but conveniently eliminates the upgrade path that once let a $400 machine last a decade. Proprietary screws, waterproof seals that void warranties, and software locks that brick devices when non-certified parts are installed all serve the same function: making repair more expensive than replacement.
Apple's "parts pairing" system is a masterclass in this. Even if you source a legitimate iPhone screen from another iPhone, the device will flag it as unauthorized and disable features like True Tone or Face ID. You're not just locked into Apple's repair network — you're locked into paying Apple's prices, or buying new.
The Lobbying Machine Blocking Your Right to Fix Stuff
For years, a growing coalition of repair advocates, independent technicians, environmental groups, and farmers — yes, farmers, because John Deere pulled the same move on tractors — have been pushing right-to-repair legislation at the state and federal level. The argument is straightforward: if you own something, you should be able to fix it.
The tech industry's response has been to spend millions making sure that doesn't happen.
The Consumer Technology Association, a trade group whose members include Apple, Microsoft, and Samsung, has lobbied aggressively against right-to-repair bills in statehouses across the country. Their talking points lean heavily on safety and intellectual property concerns — reasonable-sounding objections that conveniently align with keeping repair monopolies intact. In states like Nebraska, Minnesota, and New York, right-to-repair bills have been introduced, watered down, and quietly killed in committee after industry lobbying campaigns.
New York did pass a Digital Fair Repair Act in 2022, but the version that became law was so heavily amended — excluding farm equipment, medical devices, and home appliances — that advocates called it a shadow of the original bill. The message from Big Tech was received loud and clear in other state capitals.
At the federal level, the Federal Trade Commission issued a report in 2021 finding "no empirical evidence" to support manufacturers' safety and security justifications for repair restrictions, and called on Congress to act. Congress has largely not acted. Lobbyist dollars have a way of slowing things down.
Who Actually Pays the Price
Here's the part that should make you furious: the communities absorbing the real cost of this system are the ones with the least power to fight back.
E-waste processing hubs in Ghana, Nigeria, and India — places like Agbogbloshie in Accra, once called the world's largest e-waste dump — are filled with discarded American and European devices. Workers there suffer elevated rates of lead poisoning, respiratory disease, and neurological damage. The children sorting through burned circuit boards didn't buy an iPhone. They're just living downstream of someone else's upgrade cycle.
In the US, low-income communities and communities of color disproportionately live near the informal recycling operations and landfills that absorb e-waste. The same environmental justice fault lines that run through every other chapter of the climate crisis run through this one too.
Meanwhile, the carbon cost of manufacturing a new smartphone — estimated at between 60 and 95 kilograms of CO2 equivalent — is staggering when multiplied across hundreds of millions of units per year. Extending the average smartphone lifespan by just one year across the US market would be the emissions equivalent of taking millions of cars off the road. That's not a hypothetical. That's math that the industry simply chooses not to publicize.
What Fighting Back Looks Like
The good news — and there is some — is that the right-to-repair movement is gaining real momentum, and it's broader than most people realize.
iFixit, the repair manual platform and parts retailer, has become a genuine thorn in the industry's side, publishing teardown guides and lobbying scores for tech companies. Organizations like US PIRG and the Repair Association have been grinding away at state legislatures for years. The FTC under Chair Lina Khan signaled stronger enforcement intentions around repair restrictions before the current administration shift, and some of that groundwork remains.
Colorado passed a right-to-repair law for agricultural equipment in 2023. Minnesota followed. The European Union — which often moves faster on consumer protection than the US — passed sweeping right-to-repair rules in 2024 requiring manufacturers to provide spare parts and repair information for a wide range of electronics.
And consumers are starting to vote with their wallets. Framework Laptop, a company that builds modular, fully repairable computers, has developed a cult following. Fairphone, a Dutch manufacturer building phones designed to last, keeps expanding its reach.
But individual choices only go so far when the industry's structural incentives remain unchanged. Real change means passing federal right-to-repair legislation with teeth. It means holding tech companies accountable for the full lifecycle emissions of their products — not just the marketing brochure version. It means treating e-waste as the environmental justice crisis it is, not an afterthought.
Your phone was built to die. It didn't have to be. And the people who made that choice are counting on you to stay frustrated, stay distracted, and keep buying the next one.
